SAFETY TIPS

Parking at Highport

When parking at the marina, please be sure to use either the head-in parking on the inland side of the road spanning the marina, or the parallel parking along the shoreline. While we do not have lines designating specific parking spaces, please be courteous to your neighbors and make sure your vehicle does not take up more than one parking spot.

Trailer parking is available at the launch ramp and in the open grassy area, on the east side of the marina, by L Dock.

Lake Swimming Safety

Planning on taking a dip in the lake this weekend? Whether you are hanging out at the islands or at your dock, follow these tips to have a safe and fun trip on Lake Texoma:

Don’t Drink the Lake Water – While everyone knows lake water is unsafe to drink, think about those times you jump in and don’t plug your nose. Even if you don’t swallow the water, any water getting into your oral sinuses or throat could contain nasty microbes that no one wants to deal with. So take care to plug your nose, when doing those crazy stunts.

Always Wear a Life Jacket – Think of it this way: even Olympic swimmers can be pulled under water by undertow. So whether you are an Olympic-level athlete or a beginner swimmer, it’s always better to wear a life jacket on the lake.

Avoid Boat Exhaust When Swimming – Don’t swim around the motor of the boat, especially when it’s on. The carbon monoxide fumes that hover above the surface of the water can be just as deadly as in a home. And, it’s always better to stay away from the sharp motor propellers than to get an infected cut.

Always Swim with a Buddy – With all the hustle and bustle on the lake, it’s easy to lose track of swimmers. Make the Buddy System a standard swimming practice. That way, there’s a better chance of noticing a missing swimmer, sooner rather than later.

Think Before You Jump – There are a number of injuries that can happen when jumping into the murky depths of a lake, from slipping and falling in, jumping into shallow water, or even jumping into water with lots of debris. If you want to make a splash, check out the area first to make sure the water is deep enough for a jump, has no debris, and you have sure footing while on land.
