SAFETY TIPS

Navigating Crowded Lakes

Everyone’s been there. You’re at your favorite spot on the lake, grilling or enjoying a drink, and another boat rushes by going too fast, throwing wake and rocking your boat. You spill your drink, get hot grease on your skin and the cursing begins.

With Labor Day approaching, Lake Texoma is getting more crowded every weekend. Remember these two rules of etiquette to navigate through the crowd safely.

crowdedlakes
  1. If your boat is overtaking a slower vessel, slow down and give them as much space as the depth allows to reduce the effects of your boat’s wake on their boat.
  2. If you are being overtaken by a faster vessel, it’s also a good idea to slow down to further diminish any wake produced by either boat.

With both boats slowing down and giving each other room, the faster-moving boat will pass by safely without creating too much wake.

Remember to enter the harbor of the marina as slowly as possible to control your wake. Our entrance is lit with yellow, green and red lights. Use the yellow lights to navigate towards the entrance. At the entrance, the lights change color to red on the right side of the entrance and green on the left side. When returning to the harbor, the red lights should always be on the right side of your boat. Think, “Red, Right, Return.”

Lastly, when leaving your dock, please remember to close your boathouse gates. Just as you would close your backyard gate at home, this helps with safety AND security.
